Same Name, Very Different Programs: Read the Curriculum Line by Line
Two universities can both call a program "MSc Data Science" while they are completely different. One may be heavy on statistics and machine learning, another on data engineering and cloud infrastructure, a third on business intelligence and management. Don't let the title mislead you — the curriculum decides.
Go to the program page, download the course catalogue / module handbook, and answer these questions:
- Required / elective balance: How many ECTS are mandatory, how many elective? A typical European master's is 90–120 ECTS; if most of it is compulsory, flexibility is low.
- Thesis, coursework, or internship?: Some programs end with a 30-ECTS research thesis (ideal for an academic career), others are "taught masters" with a small capstone (suited to a fast move into industry).
- Prerequisite courses: If your bachelor's left a gap, a bridging/prerequisite requirement may appear, extending your time and cost.
- Lab / project hours: Theoretical or applied? Check the "lecture / seminar / lab" split next to course titles.
Put the two programs side by side and mark the shared and the differing courses. The program whose elective pool best overlaps with your interests is usually the right pick.
Program Length and Structure: One Year or Two?
Program length is not just a calendar matter — it directly affects your cost, depth, and career timing.

The one-year UK model lowers total cost but narrows the window for internships and networking before returning to the workforce. The two-year European model lets you do a summer internship and possibly land a job offer before graduating. Compare "total cost per diploma" and "how job-ready you'll be at graduation," not the yearly tuition.
Funding: TA, RA, Scholarships, and Tuition Waivers
A program's true cost is not the sticker tuition — it's the net you pay after the support you can secure.
- TA (Teaching Assistantship): A salary for assisting in teaching, usually plus a tuition waiver. Very common in US and Canadian PhD programs; some master's offer it too.
- RA (Research Assistantship): You work on a professor's research project; salary plus tuition waiver. If it overlaps with your thesis, it brings both money and publications.
- Tuition waiver: Just the tuition cancelled, without a salary. Can come bundled with a TA/RA.
- Scholarships: DAAD (Germany), Erasmus+, university merit awards, Türkiye Scholarships/YTB. Most require an admission letter first, so applying to several programs increases your funding odds.
In US/Canada PhD postings, "fully funded" is standard — you generally don't enter an unfunded PhD. In Europe, a PhD is often an employment contract (in the Netherlands, for instance, PhDs count as salaried staff), so you receive a salary rather than paying tuition.
When comparing, ask: Is the support guaranteed or competitive? How many years does it last? Is renewal performance-dependent? There's a world of difference between a "possible scholarship" and "guaranteed funding written into your offer letter."
Research Career Outcomes With Data
If the program page has a "Career Outcomes," "Graduate Destinations," or "Employment Statistics" section, it's gold — employment rate, average starting salary, and the companies alumni join are listed there. If not, dig yourself:
- On LinkedIn, filter by university + program name to find alumni. Study at least 10–15 profiles: who, where, which role, how many years to promotion?
- If you have an academic goal, check candidate advisors' Google Scholar profiles — publications and citations in the last 3 years? Where do their students go after graduating?
- How strong are the program's industry links, internship partnerships, and alumni network?
Treat published "average salary" and "employment rate" figures with caution: the sample may be small, self-selecting alumni may have responded, and numbers can be skewed toward those who reported. Look not at a single shiny number but at the real trajectory of many graduates. This analysis reveals a truth no brochure will.
Accreditation and Recognition (Critical If You'll Return to Turkey)
Check the program's quality and the validity of its diploma on two levels: institutional recognition and field-specific accreditation.
The Turkey / YÖK dimension: If you'll use your diploma in Turkey, the university must be recognized by YÖK. After graduation you apply for equivalence (denklik); the 2026 application fee is 1,250 TL. The ranking bodies YÖK relies on are THE, QS, ARWU (Shanghai), and CWTS Leiden; higher-ranked institutions ease the equivalence process. Field-specific accreditation signals quality:
- ABET — engineering and technology programs
- AACSB / EQUIS / AMBA — business schools; "Triple Crown" schools holding all three are fewer than 1% worldwide
- ENAEE / EUR-ACE — European engineering programs
- For regulated professions like health, law, and architecture, professional recognition is a separate matter: even if the diploma is academically equivalent, practicing the profession in Turkey may require an additional exam/internship.
Accreditation is not just a badge: exchange agreements, double degrees, and some employers' pre-screening depend on it.
Decision Matrix: Score the Programs Side by Side
If you're torn between a few programs, turn emotion into data. Weight the criteria that matter to you, score each program 1–10, multiply by the weight, and add it up.

If the totals are close, let the criterion that weighs most for you (funding, for most students) be the tie-breaker. Putting it on paper prevents emotional, brand-driven decisions.

Do:
- Download and read the curriculum, and compare the two programs course by course.
- Clarify the thesis/internship requirement and the program length.
- Investigate faculty profiles (Google Scholar / lab pages).
- Analyze the LinkedIn trajectory of at least 10 alumni.
- Calculate the net cost including tuition + scholarships + TA/RA.
- Confirm YÖK recognition and field accreditation.
Avoid:
- Looking only at the university's overall ranking and ignoring program content.
- Comparing yearly tuition while skipping total-duration cost and net funding.
- Deciding on the assumption of a "possible scholarship" that never materializes in the offer.
- Confusing academic equivalence with professional recognition in regulated fields (health, law).
- Locking onto a single program and losing funding leverage and a backup option.
